Similarly, in the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison, the reader is presented with a powerful story of the horrors of slavery and the lasting effects it had on African Americans. In the poem “I, Too” by Langston Hughes, the reader is presented with a powerful statement of African American pride and resilience in the face of oppression. Finally, in the novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, the reader is presented with a story of teenage angst and alienation in the 1950s.
