Kenya is a multi-party republic with a presidential system of government. The current president is Uhuru Kenyatta, who was elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. The president is both the head of state and head of government, and is elected by popular vote for a five-year term. The unicameral National Assembly is composed of 349 members, 290 of whom are elected from single-member constituencies and the remaining 59 are nominated by political parties.
Kenya has a strong commitment to human rights and the rule of law. The Constitution of Kenya guarantees the right to freedom of expression, assembly, and association, as well as the right to a fair trial.
Kenya has a vibrant multi-party system. The major political parties are the Jubilee Party, the Orange Democratic Movement, the Wiper Democratic Movement, the United Republican Party, and the National Rainbow Coalition. These parties are active in both national and local elections.
