Frederick Jackson Turner claimed the frontier was “closed” because he believed that the rapid settlement of the West had reached its end. He argued that the end of the frontier meant the end of the unique American experience of pioneering and expansion, and that the nation would now have to focus on developing its existing resources and institutions.
