The clean-up process after the 1985 eruption of Nevado del Ruiz took several years. The Colombian government declared a state of emergency in the region and launched a massive relief effort to help the affected communities. The government also implemented a long-term plan to reduce the risk of future eruptions, including the construction of a new monitoring system and the relocation of thousands of people living in the danger zone. The clean-up process was completed in the early 1990s.
