The best difference between an ethnic group and an ethnic identity is that an ethnic group is a group of people who share a common ancestry, language, culture, and/or religion, while an ethnic identity is an individual's self-identification with a particular ethnic group. An individual's ethnic identity is based on their own personal experiences and beliefs, and is not necessarily shared by all members of their ethnic group.
