Vasily Arkhipov was a Soviet Navy officer who is credited with preventing a nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. He was the second-in-command of a Soviet submarine that was confronted by US Navy destroyers. He refused to authorize the launch of a nuclear torpedo, thus averting a potential nuclear conflict.
