The worst earthquake in South Carolina occurred on August 31, 1886. It had a magnitude of 7.3 and caused extensive damage throughout the state. The epicenter was located near Charleston, and the quake was felt as far away as Boston and Cuba. It caused an estimated $6 million in damage and killed at least 60 people.
