The explorer credited as being the first to circumnavigate the Earth is Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, set sail in 1519 with a crew of about 270 men and a fleet of five ships. Unfortunately, Magellan didn't survive the journey as he was killed during a skirmish in the Philippines in 1521. However, his crew continued the expedition and completed the circumnavigation three years later in 1522 with a single ship, the Victoria, and only 18 surviving crew members.
