What is the difference between an in-text citation and works cited page?

Please explain the differences for me I am confused.

Works cited — the page on which you list all the sources you used to research for your assignment. This is a separate page that is included after the conclusion of your paper.

In-text citation — a reference to a particular work from your works cited page to tell where you got a particular piece of information. You may have several (or even many) of these throughout your paper.
