In order to find the probability of two balls being picked from a barke without replacement, we need to know the number of each color of ball. (a) To find the probability of both balls being red, we need to find the ratio between the number of red balls and the total number of balls before the first pick. In this case, it would be 3/8 (3 red balls out of 8 total balls). After the first pick, there would be 7 balls left, with 2 red balls. So, the probability of picking a red ball again would be 2/7. To find the probability of both events happening in succession, we multiply the probabilities: (3/8) * (2/7) = 6/56, which simplifies to 3/28.
(b) To find the probability of one ball being blue and the other being red, we calculate the probability of picking a blue ball first and then a red ball, or vice versa. The probability of picking a blue ball first would be 5/8, and then there would be 7 balls left, with 3 red balls. So the probability of picking a red ball next would be 3/7. The same calculation can be done for picking a red ball first and then a blue ball.
