They didn’t do (anything, nothing) to solve this problem.
In some languages, a double negative is acceptable and serves as emphasis, but in English, a double negative is either an error or the negatives cancel each other out.
They didn't do anything… <~~means they did nothing
They didn't do nothing… <~~ means they did something
Which will you choose?
