Sam, The Flying Squirrel

Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, on a spring morning, Sam the Squirrel woke up tot the beautiful sounds of a robin singing. Sam couldn’t sing. He couldn’t fly either, like robins could. Sam wanted to fly away into the sky like a bird in the wind, without a care in the world. That night the Squirrel Genie appeared to Sam in a dream. Sam told him what he wanted to do: fly and sing. The Squirrel Genie said she would grant him a wish, but he could only have one of those wishes. The next morning when Sam woke up, he stretched out his arms as he yawned and lost his balance. He began to fall to the ground from his home in the oak tree. Suddenly, as he fell, he caught some wind and flew to the next tree without any effort at all! He didn’t fall and land on the hard ground or get hurt. Sam’s wish has been granted. To this day, Sam’s relatives, the flying squirrels, live in the U.S. on the East Coast and in some Northern states.

You are welcome. Good job!

1. The setting of the story is not explicitly mentioned, but we can infer that it takes place in a natural environment, possibly a forest or woodland area where squirrels live.

To determine the specific setting, we can look for clues in the text, such as references to trees, the presence of animals like squirrels and robins, and the mention of the East Coast and Northern states in the United States. By gathering these clues, we can conclude that the setting of the story is likely an oak tree in a forest on the East Coast or in the Northern states of the U.S.

2. At the beginning of the story, Sam the Squirrel wakes up to the sound of a robin singing, which he envies because he cannot sing or fly like the bird. This sets up Sam's desire to fly and sing.

3. In the middle of the story, Sam has a dream in which the Squirrel Genie appears. Sam tells the genie about his wish to fly and sing, and the genie grants him one of those wishes. The next morning, when Sam wakes up, he accidentally discovers that he can fly by catching the wind as he falls from his oak tree home.

4. At the end of the story, it is revealed that Sam's wish to fly has been granted. It is mentioned that Sam's relatives, known as flying squirrels, live in the U.S. on the East Coast and in some Northern states. This suggests that Sam becomes the ancestor of the flying squirrels who can soar through the air.
