After Siddhartha Gautama witnessed old age, sickness, death, and a holy man, he was deeply affected by the suffering and impermanence of worldly existence. This led him to renounce his luxurious life as a prince and set out on a spiritual quest to find the ultimate solution to human suffering. To truly understand the cause and end of suffering, Siddhartha Gautama practiced severe asceticism for several years, subjecting himself to extreme physical deprivation and self-mortification.

However, he soon realized that extreme asceticism did not provide the answers he sought. Instead, he turned towards a path of moderation and embarked on a period of intense meditation and self-reflection. Eventually, Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment while sitting under a Bodhi tree, now known as the Buddha.

After attaining enlightenment, Siddhartha Gautama became the Buddha, which means "the awakened one." He dedicated the rest of his life to teaching others about his insights and helping them find liberation from suffering. The Buddha traveled extensively, delivering sermons and teachings, establishing a community of monks and nuns, and gaining followers who embraced his teachings, which later came to be known as Buddhism. The Buddha's teachings, known as the Dharma, emphasized the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path as the means to achieve liberation from suffering and to attain enlightenment.
