Im wondering what sound devices are in these 2 poems

Winter by Nikki Giovanni

once a snowflake fell
on my brow and i loved
it so much and i kissed
it and it was happy and called its cousins
and brothers and a web
of snow engulfed me then
i reached to love them all
and i squeezed them and they became
a spring rain and i stood perfectly
still and was a flower

I think the sound device are are assonance

The Courage That My Mother Had by Edna St. Vincent Millay

The courage that my mother had
Went with her, and is with her still:
Rock from New England quarried;
Now granite in a granite hill.

The golden brooch my mother wore
She left behind for me to wear;
I have no thing I treasure more:
Yet, it is something I could spare.

Oh, if instead she'd left to me

The thing she took into the grave!—
That courage like a rock, which she
Has no more need of, and I have.
Edna St. Vincent Millay

I think the sound device is alliteration

Thank you I was confused on the sound devices in each poem i some how skipped them in my lesson before doing this assignment

In the poem "Winter" by Nikki Giovanni, the sound device used is primarily alliteration. Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words in close proximity. For example, in the lines "once a snowflake fell" and "called its cousins and brothers," the repeated "s" sound creates an alliterative effect.

As for the poem "The Courage That My Mother Had" by Edna St. Vincent Millay, the sound device used is indeed alliteration. Alliteration is used in this poem to emphasize particular sounds, creating a rhythmic and musical effect. For instance, the repetition of the "c" sound in "courage," "came," and "could" in the first stanza is an example of alliteration.

To identify sound devices in poems, it is essential to pay attention to the repetition of consonant sounds, assonance (repetition of vowel sounds), and other sound patterns. A helpful approach is to read the poem aloud, focusing on the sounds and identifying any repetitions or patterns.

Assonance is when there are words with the same vowel sound, one right after the other. Here’s an example: jumpy monkey sundae

I hear no assonance in the first poem.

Alliteration is when there are words with the same consonant sound, one right after the other. Here’s an example: rifles rapid rattle
Where’s the alliteration in the second poem?
