You are a member of your local movie theater’s club. Every time you see a movie at the theater, you earn 2 advantage points. When you earn 100 points, you get a free movie pass. Currently, you have 40 advantage points.

Write an equation to model the number of movies m you have to watch before you earn a free movie pass.
Solve the equation. Show your work.

100-40=1x+2?
Help is appreciated

Points still needed + your 40 = 100

2m + 40 = 100

your equation would have a solution of x = 58
You could have seen immediately that this would not be right.

your answer doens make sense to me, I know that I have 40 points which means I have been to 20 movies. I have to get 60 more points to get to 100. so I can go to a free movie. 60 points= 30 movies. I have already watched 20 movies. 30+20=50 movies i have to watch. now I have to figure out an equation. The equation part is what I am stuck on.

Im at 8th grade level maybe you are a tutor for older people than me. (8thgrader)

His answer is correct and your thinking is correct.

You saw 20 movies and have 40 points

You need to see ? number of movies to get the other 60 points.
You know that is 30 movies...

For the equation... put in 40 + 2(?) = 100

or in algebra: 40 + 2x = 100

if x = 30 then you will have your 40 points plus 60 points

and you have seen 50 movies. Hope this helps.

it helps a little tahnk you, but somthing im still confused on is if i were to put m like it says in the problem and solve I dont get 50 or 30 as m

40+2m=100

40-40+2m=100-40
2m=60
2m/2=60/2
m=30
omg thanks so much john you helped alot i guess i just had to re-do and type out the equation a couple of times...

You are welcome.

To create an equation to model the number of movies you have to watch before you earn a free movie pass, you need to determine how many advantage points you earn for each movie. In this case, you earn 2 advantage points for each movie you watch.

Let's assume "m" represents the number of movies you need to watch before earning a free movie pass. Therefore, the total number of advantage points you will have earned after watching "m" movies can be calculated by multiplying the number of movies by the advantage points earned per movie, which is 2.

So, the equation becomes:

2m + 40 = 100

To solve this equation, we need to isolate "m" on one side.

Subtracting 40 from both sides of the equation gives:

2m = 100 - 40

Simplifying further:

2m = 60

Now, divide both sides of the equation by 2:

m = 60 ÷ 2

m = 30

Therefore, you would need to watch 30 movies before earning a free movie pass.
