None of the choices are good if you are lookng for the first usage. B (mayans) were later, but if you don't know anything about Math history, B is as good as it gets in this question. Descartes, of the French Academy, is the person who taught us to use zero as a place holder (as in 100), before Descartes, dashes were used as place holders as in 1--
