  1. Online, “*” is used to indicate multiplication to avoid confusion with “x” as an unknown.

    Anything times 0 = 0

    If 0 is added to anything, it does not change the amount.

    10*x + 0 = 10x

    If you are just adding or subtracting, just remove the parenthesis.

    Example: 5 + (6 +7) = 5 + 6 + 7 = 18

    If multiplying, just multiply. Example:

    5(2a) = 10a
