None of the resources I've read really answer the question of what the function of high culture in Classical Athens was

Have you tried carefully reading your text?

I'm sure it's in there. This is not a term with which I'm familiar.

How is your text defining "high culture" in ancient Athens?

I majored in classical studies (ancient Greek, Rome, their histories and cultures), and I've never heard this term before. It may be something your school/text has made up. No matter, though ... you still need to tell us what is meant by "high culture."

That's the thing, I have never heard the term "high culture" used to describe this period either. I don't have a textbook for this course, I'm just supposed to research to find my answers. It's an online course and I don't have any materials to study the subject. It's just research basically.

Then you probably need to use Google and run searches on these phrases:

golden age athens government

golden age athens art and architecture

golden age athens literature and drama

You should also read through several of the linked articles in Ms. Sue's and my Google results above ... that is, providing you're primarily dealing with 5th century BC Athens.
