It was the American Civil War ending....with lots of wild cattle which had reproduced, and lots of young men unemployed, landless (because of scalawags stealing their land), looking for employment, and with the war over, Northern folks wanted beef, and had the money to buy it. The earlier California Gold discoveries (and subsequent western migration) helped drive the cattle drive need.
