(1) Long ago, the Everglades were a broad expanse of shallow water covering the southern tip of Florida.   3. The other three choices are quite clumsy. I have no idea what to suggest.

    B is best to me, if the goal is to vary the sentences. B has a prepositional phrase at the beginning, followed by the main clause.
