I take 10% and 20% of the number. For this ride, that would be about $2.33 and 4.66.

Then I estimate what is about half way between those two numbers. It looks like about $3.50 would be about 15%.

10% + 5% = 15%

2.3 + half of that
2.3 + 1.2
= 3.50

mental math can be used because all you have to do is add 2.3 to half which is 1.2 so basically it is simple adding.

hello! I know some people are having trouble with this question so here4s what I did:
(don't copy word for word)

I did 15% x 23.25 = 3.4875 because
part = percent x whole
In this case, the "part" is the tip, the percent is 15% or 0.15, and the whole is 23.25.
if you're talking about money like in this example you could(probably) round 3.4875 to $3.48

also some help with other problems:
percent = part(is) ÷ whole(of) x 100
part(is) = percent x whole
whole(of) = part ÷ percent

the is whole and of are just to help you figure out which number is which thing in the equation!

Find 1%, 5%, and 10%.

1. Finding 1% means we just move the place value down by 2.

23.25 -> 0.2325

2. Finding 5% means we multiply 0.2325 by 5. But we're estimating the tip, so it doesn't have to be exact. Round 0.2325 to the nearest tenth, then multiply by 5.

0.2325 ~ 0.2
0.2 * 5 = 1

3. To estimate 10% of 23.25, we will multiply 5% by 2. So, 1 * 2.

1 * 2 = 2
2 ~ 10% of 23.25

4. We will add 10% and 5% to get 15%.

10% + 5% = 15%
2 + 1 = 3
