  2. Thank you for using the Jiskha Homework Help Forum.

#1 = this could be a typo that "and" should be "are." It is not a run-on sentence.

#2 = This is a run-on as the comma does not work; it needs to be either a semicolon or a period to begin a new sentence.

    #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 = correct

    #8 = looks fine

#9 = he, because there are 2 subjects

    #10 = some people might hyphenate "chocolate-chip."

    #11 = OK

Is there a typo in this sentence as Sra asked? Whether there is or not makes a difference in reading it, but it's definitely not a run-on.

Identify the pronoun error in each of the following sentences.

6.The teacher said they were going to grade the test over the weekend.
    __ Pronoun shift in number
    _XX_ Pronoun shift in person
    __ Ambiguous reference
    __ No error
There's a pronoun shift here, for sure, but it's not in person. How many teachers are mentioned? To whom is "they" referring?

7.Sally told Janice that she made the honor role.
    __ Pronoun shift in number
    __ Pronoun shift in person
__ Ambiguous reference – Because she could refer to either girl, and it is not clear which one.
    _XX_ No error
To whom is "she" referring -- Sally or Janice?

8.The new employees worked long hours, hoping that doing so would advance their career.
    __ Pronoun shift in number
    __ Pronoun shift in person
    _XX_ Ambiguous reference
    __ No error
I see no ambiguous reference here; the only error I see is the use of "career" instead of "careers" since obviously employees (plural) do not have one career among them! But that's not one of your choices.

9.Dave hoped that __ and Steve would win the tennis tournament.
    _XX_ him
    __ himself
    __ he
    __ his
    See Sra's answer.

10.Lisa hoped that Shelly had remembered to ask her mother for the chocolate chip cookies.
    __ Pronoun shift in number
    __ Pronoun shift in person
    __ Ambiguous reference
    _XX_ No error
To whom does "her" refer - Lisa or Shelly?
