  3. Many people in the "aging population" have a hard time making financial ends meet. The average monthly Social Security check is about $1,000. From that they must pay for medications, housing, utilities, food, clothing, taxes, and transportation. The sky-rocketing costs of health care, even with Medicare, means that some older people have to decide whether to eat properly or buy medications. Those people who live in their own homes often have trouble paying for maintenance and utilities.
