Please choose the correct option to complete the following statements. (6 marks)

a) If a large amount of base is added to water, the pH of resulting solution would most likely Increase/decrease/remain the same
Explain your choice

b) If a small amount of acid is added to a buffer with pH 6.5, the pH of resulting solution would most likely increase/decrease/remain the same
Explain your choice

c) If a very large amount of strong acid is added to a buffer with pH 6.5, the pH of resulting solution would most likely increase/decrease/remain the same
Explain your choice

Is it Increase; Decrease; Decrease?

No. One of the three is correct.

Can you help please?

on b, think what a buffer does.

on c, if a very large stsron acid, it is most likely to make the solution more acid, decreasing, I agree with that. THe issue is what is a very large amount.

A chemical buffer works by reacting with the hydrogen or hydroxyl ions that result from adding an acid (a substance high in hydrogen ions) to the solution. The buffer chemically binds these ions into a form in the compound that keeps them from being free in the solution to affect the pH. so for B is remains the same?

Right.

What about a? It doesn't increase? if so why?

Water is neutral therefore is it has a pH of 7. Adding would become more basic and would shift the pH.Therefore the solution would most likely decrease when a reaction occurs.
