Hello!

Have a question. I am writing a lesson plan and am confused now.
When learners are doing for example a fill in exercise (e.g. they have to put the verbs in brackets in the Past Simple) what kind of a teaching method or technique am i using? It is obviously not written practice since they are writing only one verb in the sentence. So what is is then?

In the sequence on Bloom's Taxonomy, this type of fill-in-the-blank exercise would either be knowledge (level 1) or maybe comprehension (level 2), but certainly no higher.

Hello! I'd be happy to help you with your question.

In your scenario, when learners are doing a fill-in exercise where they have to put the verbs in brackets in the Past Simple, you are using a teaching method or technique called "explicit instruction" or "guided practice."

Explicit instruction is a teaching approach where the teacher provides clear and direct instructions to guide learners through a task. In this case, you are explicitly instructing the learners to identify the correct verb tense and place it in the appropriate position within the sentence.

The fill-in exercise is a form of guided practice because you are providing specific prompts (the brackets and the verb tense) that guide the learners towards the correct answer. By filling in the missing verb, the learners are actively applying their knowledge of the Past Simple tense.

To provide further guidance and support, you may want to consider offering examples or explanations before the exercise to ensure that the learners understand the rules or patterns of the Past Simple tense. Additionally, you can provide feedback after the exercise to reinforce correct answers and address any misconceptions.

Overall, the combination of explicit instruction and guided practice helps learners develop their understanding and application of the targeted grammar point.
