"I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is to try to please everyone."---Bill Cosby

Question: Is trying to please people a way to achieve success or a rout to failure?

Human natures does not allow for consensus upon all matters in life. With each person inherently different from the other, we all come together to form an opinionated and diversified society. Needless to say, appeasing everyone in the crowd is an impossible feat doomed to failure. I strongly believe that attempts to satisfy all are doomed from the start; this can be seen through the experiences of Dagny Taggart and Henry Rearden in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged (underlined).

Dagny Taggart is the VP of Operations at Taggart Transcontinental. Her brother being the owner of the company, her jop is to make everything go smoothly in a way that she gets approval from her brother, the Board of Directors, the workers union and the train riders. She is responsible for taking countless risks to keep everything going smoothly. When a mishap occurs, she becomes the epicenter of the blame while all of her successes are overlooked. Realizing that she would never be able to please everyone, she abandons her job to go live with those who ended up just like her.

Hank Rearden is another character entwined with Dagny in many ways. He weeks to fulfill her orders for steel all the while remaining loyal to his other customers and still seem appealing in the public eye. As he loses support trying to satisfy all, his friends become the ones who go out of their way to destroy him. Face with a similar situation to Taggart's, Rearden abandons his futile efforts to appease to everyone, and goes off to live in solitude.

These characters had to spend their lives in vain only to realize that their aims were futile. Appealing to all of society is a doomed mission at the start, and intrinsic fact of human nature that can never be over come.

Unless you are instructed to write with literary back-up for your main idea, you should really work on developing ideas from your own experiences.

All the conclusions in your SAT practice essays have been short and weak -- undeveloped. Here are a couple of webpages that might help you.

I'd give this paper a 4.

Thank you.

You're welcome. Keep on practicing!

In the first sentence, I am sure you mean 'route' instead of 'rout.' In the second paragraph, 'jop' should be 'job'. Work on you proofreading as well.

Based on the quote by Bill Cosby and the examples from Ayn Rand's novel, it can be concluded that trying to please everyone is a route to failure rather than a way to achieve success. In our complex and diverse society, it is impossible to satisfy every individual's preferences and expectations. People have different opinions, values, and desires, making it challenging to find common ground or consensus.

To answer the question yourself, you can reflect on your own experiences or observe various situations where people have tried to please everyone. Consider the outcomes of these attempts and whether they have led to success or failure. Additionally, you can study case studies or examples from literature, like the ones mentioned from Ayn Rand's novel, to gain further insights.

It is important to note that success is subjective, and what may work for one person might not work for another. It is essential to define your own definition of success and understand that it is not always possible or necessary to please everyone. Striving for authenticity, staying true to your values, and focusing on making a positive impact can be a more fruitful approach than trying to please everyone.
