1. since each animal only has one head, there must have been 40 animals
let the number of cows be x
then the number of chickes is 40-x

4x + 2(40-x) = 112
4x + 80 - 2x = 112
2x = 32
x = 16

so 16 cows and 24 chickens

5. X=cow
Y=chicken
X+y=35
Y=35-X
4x+2(35-x) =96
4x+70-2x=96
4x-2x=96-70
2x=26
X=26:2
X=13(cows)
Chicken=35-13
=22 chickens
