  1. Thank you for using the Jiskha Homework Help Forum. First of all, do you know what kind of learner you are? If you learn by SEEING, you are a visual learner. If you learn by HEARING, you are an aural learner. If you need to be PHYSICALLY involved, you are a kinesthetic learner. Many people are a combination of two of those, but once you know how you learn best, that will help you.

Flash cards that are small enough to keep in your pocket can help by using them when you have time. Put the ones that are easy for you to one side so you can concentrate on the more difficult ones.

Invest in a hand-held tape recorder. Put what you want to learn on the tape (words or phrases) with a space after that. At first practice "passive learning" by simply listening over and over until you can "predict" the next one. After that, listen and repeat in that space. The next step is to write that word or phrase in that space, much like dictation.

As for vocabulary, you could label things in your house. Then when you see a chair, or sit in a chair, it is no longer "chair" but "isú" or "koshikaké."

If you have the opportunity to speak with anyone who knows Japanese, "total immersion" is the best way to learn.
