do converging/diverging lenses work because of refraction?

  1. Yes. Almost all lenses work by refraction.

A given lens is either converging or diverging, but not both. The name describes what happens to light that enters as parallel rays from one side.

Nonprescription sunglasses don't use refraction. They just filter the light, making it weaker.
