Understanding Paragraphs

Read each of the following paragraph and underline the topic sentence.

First, language consists of a large number of symbols. The symbols that make up a language are commonly referred to as words. They are the labels that we have assigned to the mental representation of our experiences. When we use the word chair as a symbol, we don't use it to label any one specific instance of a chair. We use it to represent our concept of what a chair is. Note that, as symbols, words do not have to stand for real things in the real world. With language, we can communicate about owls and cats in teacups; four-dimensional, time-warped hyperspace; and a cartoon beagle that flies his doghouse into battle against the Red Baron. Words are used to stand for our cognitions, our concepts, and we have a great number of them.
