discuss what Maya Angelou means by the title of her autobiography

A bird in a cage is not free, but a captive. Canaries, for example, sing; why do you suppose that is? Because she is trapped she can’t do anything about just sing. So in this story Maya is the bird she trapped because she is trapped and she sings as in she prays or waits till life gets better. Maya becomes a mother at the age of 17. In the course of caged bird, Maya transforms from a victim of racism with an inferiority complex into a self-possessed, dignified young woman capable of responding to prejudice.
