  1. 4 m/s is a very slow pitch. It is only 8.95 mph. A ball thrown at that speed would not make it to the batter's box without rolling there.

    Are you sure you copied the problem correctly? A good pitcher throws fast balls over 90 mph.

    Average speed while throwing = 2 m/s.
    Time = Distance/(Avg speed) = 3.5m/(2 m/s)
    = 1.75 s.

    Final speed divided by that time is the acceleration.

    The average speed during the throw is
    20.5 m/s. The time spent throwing is
    T = 3.5/20.5 = 0.1707 s
    The acceleration of the ball during the throw is (41 m/s)/(0.1707s)= 240 m/s^2
