How do you know when to use a coordinate bond with molecular compounds?

  1. Coordinate bonds are formed when an atom has a lone pair of electrons.
    :NH3 is an example. A bare proton can come in and attach to the lone pair to form the NH4+ ion.

  3. Frankly, I never thought about that; however, I can't think of one off hand that doesn't. The peroxide ion might be one.
