Can someone please help me with this one?

Explain which of the following statements does not make sense:
a. a role of masking tape weighs 350 micrograms
b. 92 cm cubed of water was poured onto the table
c. the room covers an area of 200 m cubed

I was thinking it was b because water is usually measured in mL, but 1 cm cubed = 1 mL.

Thanks!

You are right. 1 mL = 1 cc; therefore, it would not be difficult to pour 92 cc of water on a table. A cup is about 250 mL, so 92 cc is about 1/4 cup or so. For c, remember that a meter is ABOUT 3 feet and m cubed measures volume whereas you are talking area. That isn't volume. Area is square meters. For a, how much would 350 micrograms be? 0.350 mg or 0.000350 g. A nickel weighs about 5 g. Do you think it makes sense for a roll of masking tape to weigh less than a nickel. Do you think an area can be measured by volume?

It would have to be c., wouldn't it? Because you cannot measure area in centimeters cubed. Though, why would masking tape weigh less than a nickel? I'm confused!!!

a. a role of masking tape weighs 350 micrograms
b. 92 cm cubed of water was poured onto the table
c. the room covers an area of 200 m cubed

We have already covered that b is reasonable. You are right that c is unreasonable because, as you correctly point out, the room covers an area of 200 m cubed but area is measured in square meters while cubic meters measures volume. Answer a is also unreasonable because a roll of masking tape weighs MUCH more than 350 micrograms (unless, of course, it is a teeny tiny roll). The problem with using a set of units with which we are unfamiliar lies in the fact that we haven't used them; therefore, we don't have a feel for how much is large and how much is small. I was trying to give you some reference point; i.e., 350 micrograms = 0.000350 grams. A nickel weighs about 5 grams. Based on that, a roll of masking tape must weigh as much or more than a bag of nickels which means the masing tape must weight much more than 350 micrograms or 0.000350 grams so the statement that a roll of masking tape weighs 350 micrograms is completely unreasonable. I hope this helps unconfuse you.

Okay, thanks, that helps. So, I'm presuming, the answer would be both a and c.

right.

Okay, thank you.

You're welcome! I'm glad I could help clarify things for you. Yes, the answer would be both a and c - neither of those statements make sense given the units used. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
