Read through several of these articles, including the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th ones. Obviously there was already international trade before European countries started sailing to farther and farther places in the world people hadn't known of before 1492; however, with the realization there was so much "undiscovered" land out there and different countries colonizing different areas (Portugal, Spain, England, France, etc.), suddenly it must have seemed limitless.
