  1. As a long-time middle school teacher, my first thought is to compare middle school to a zoo. What animals do you think can represent each of the grades?

Are the teachers the chief monkeys? Or are they the lion tamers?

  2. My middle school (actually Junior High grades 7-9, in Seattle) reminded me of the early chapters of Oliver Twist. The teachers assumed we belonged in reform school, and were more obsessed with discipline than teaching. There was an emphasis on "shop" training for boys. They kept a large paddle handy, and delighted in using it. They called it the "Board of Education".

I did have a pretty good "general science" teacher but he was a chain smoker between classes and did not seem to enjoy teaching.

High school was like a breath of freedom after that.

  5. Compare it to a comedy. There's gonna be good times and bad. You'll be hurt or having the best day ever. You'll have crushes, friends, and you'll learn from your experiences. It is both horrible and great.

  6. You can compare it to the hardest thing you'll go through up to this point. You'll go through changes, get teased because of those changes, and you'll worry too much. As you go through middle school, remember this, "I can do this. I am awesome." You'll be just fine. Good luck.
