My question is in the story "young goodman brown", by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

can someone give me an example of a literary device and how the author used it. I have to come up with at least nine of them but I can't start because i am not understanding. I looked up literary device but i am not seeing how am suppost to explain it. If some can show me the first one so i can see that will really help to get me going.

There are many instances of foreshadowing and irony all through this story.

Irony is when you (or the character) expect one thing, but something quite different actually happens.

Foreshadowing is when the author provides hints at what is to come in the story.

In "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, one example of a literary device used is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is when the author provides hints or clues about future events in the story.

To explain foreshadowing, you can look for specific moments or details in the story that hint at what will happen later on. For example, in "Young Goodman Brown," the author uses foreshadowing when Brown's wife, Faith, pleads for him not to go into the forest and tells him to stay with her. This can be seen as a hint that something dark or negative might happen in the forest.

Another example of foreshadowing in the story is when Goodman Brown meets an older man who represents the devil. The stranger has a staff that looks like a snake, which is a symbolic foreshadowing of evil and deception.

These instances of foreshadowing help create suspense and anticipation for the reader, as they suggest that there are dark and unexpected events to come in the story.
