Hi there, i posted a question similar to this yesterday that i am having a little more difficulty with.

Discuss the theme of intolerance in relation to the novel. Use examples of people who are involved in bringing out this theme.

I am having trouble coming up with a thesis statement. One of the characters who show intolerance is Aunt Alexandra who is a perfect example of narrow-mindedness and racial intolerance. When Scout and Jem want to go to Calpurnia's church she quickly hesistated and said 'No'.

I don't know how to connect the character of Aunt Alexandra to the thesis statment.

Please help.
Thank you.

Check out this site. It has an excellent analysis of themes and motifs in that book. Also check the section on Character analysis.

How about this:

In to kill a mockingbird, Aunt Alexandra is the quintessence of racial intolerance by the way she disciplines how the children should act and behave.

I'd add "as she shows" before "by."

I'd also remove "how" and "should act and behave." The sentence will be smoother.

I also had this, what do you think?

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Aunt Alexandra is the quintessence of racial intolerance, both in the way she disciplines the children and how her personal life is depicted.

That's very good!! =)

To connect the character of Aunt Alexandra to your thesis statement about intolerance, you can focus on her role as a representation of the deeply ingrained racial prejudices and narrow-mindedness prevalent in the society depicted in the novel.

Here's an example of a thesis statement that incorporates Aunt Alexandra:

"The character of Aunt Alexandra in the novel portrays the pervasive theme of intolerance through her rigid adherence to societal norms and racially biased opinions, ultimately highlighting the destructive consequences of prejudice and narrow-mindedness."

In this thesis statement, you are emphasizing that Aunt Alexandra serves as a representation of broader societal attitudes. By examining her actions and beliefs, you can explore the theme of intolerance more thoroughly in your essay. You can analyze other instances where Aunt Alexandra displays intolerance and how these instances contribute to the overall theme in the novel.

Remember to provide evidence from the novel to support your arguments, such as specific quotes or scenes involving Aunt Alexandra. This will make your analysis more persuasive and help strengthen your thesis statement.
