Math Tricks Unit Portfolio

MATH 6 A: PATTERNS AND VARIABLES
Directions: You are about to perform a “magic” math trick. Find a friend or family
member to perform your math trick for. Follow the steps below.
1. Tell your friend or family member to choose any number between 1 and 100,
but don’t have them tell you what their number is.
2. Tell them to multiply their number by 2.
3. Tell them to add 12 to their number.
4. Tell them to divide their number by 2.
5. Tell them to subtract their original number.
6. “Magically” announce that their final answer is 6.
Perform this trick several different times. If your friend or family member does their
math correctly, their answer should always be 6. Are you surprised? We will explore
the steps of this math trick in this portfolio and then you will have a chance to
create your own math trick.
Task 1
Pick a new number between 1 and 100 that you haven’t tested out yet. Complete
the table below to show your work as you go through each step of the trick. For
example, if you started with the number 10 and you multiplied it by 2, in the
“Work” column you would write “10 2 × ” and in the “Result” column you would write
“20"
Can someone plz help me??

25 * 2 = 50

50 +12 = 62

62/2 = 31

31 - 25 = 6

This is mine.

Of course, I'd be happy to help! What number would you like to start with for the math trick?
