There were three main social classes in Mayan society. These classes included nobles, the middle class, and commoners. The lowest level in Mayan society were the slaves. Nobles included kings, priests, and high-ranking officials. The middle class was made up of high-ranking commoners and lower-ranking officials. Most Mayans were commoners who farmed.
The Maya worshipped many gods. Kings and priests performed rituals in temples located at the top of pyramids. Mayan rituals were often violent and included human sacrifice. The Maya sacrificed prisoners, slaves, and children. This practice was seen as a normal part of the cycle of life and death. Sacrifice and ritual kept the gods happy.
The Maya used a system of hieroglyphic writing. They were skilled artists and architects. The Maya were skilled astronomers who plotted the path of the sun and moon. The Maya also had advanced mathematics systems that included a number for zero.
