16. Hispanic Americans generally faced less discrimination than African Americans in Texas. They had the right to vote and started to gain political power in the 1950s. They participated in government in cities where Tejanos were a large part of the population. In 1956, Henry B. González became the first Hispanic American in Texas to win a seat in the state Senate. By 1961, González had been elected to the U.S. Congress as a representative from San Antonio. In 1964, Eligio “Kiki” de la Garza from South Texas joined him in Congress. Although Hispanic Americans gained greater political participation, the day-to-day discrimination they and African Americans faced in Texas did not come to an end.
