One of the major themes of The Call of the Wild is that

both civilization and the wilderness have social
structures. Buck is faced with and must learn about-
social structures from the very outset of the novel. In
the beginning, Buck lives at Judge Miller's place where
he is clearly "ruled." As the novel progresses, Buck
learns to fear the "club" when it is yielded by certain
masters. Later in the novel, Buck is forced to fight for a
position of leadership among his sledmates or among
those who threaten their existence and safety
Throughout the story, Buck learns that social structures
exist everywhere
