Test Review Notes- South Asia Unit Test
What do I need to know for the test?! Study this sheet! Bold words are very important!
There were many developments under the Guptas, many of which included advances in areas such as engineering and art.
The Indus Valley Civilization had a lot of mysteries, such as the disappearance of people that lived in cities over a period of time and stone seals which were written on. Some of the key features of this civilization were the importance of the Indus River and the key cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa.
Hinduism has spread and grew a lot in South Asia due to many reasons, one of which is it offers flexibility in new gods. Reincarnation is an important part of this religion, which refers to the belief that the soul is eternal and therefore never dies. One of the most important and oldest Hindu texts is the Vedas, which are where the roots of Hinduism came from.
Buddhism includes the Four Noble Truths, which requires the overcoming of all selfish desires to end suffering.
Siddhartha, also known as Buddha, was led to the Middle Way through actions such as life as a Hindu Prince (life given to pleasures), meditating under the Bodhi Tree (enlightenment), and life with religious aesthetics (life of suffering).
When it comes to Muslim history in South Asia, first the Muslim empire of SW Asia took over todayβs Pakistan, then the Turkik Muslim kings rose to power in current day Afghanistan, followed by the Muslim-ruled Delhi sultanate being created.
There has been a lot of tension between religious groups in South Asia. This can be demonstrated by events such as the civil war in Sri Lanka.
As in many civilizations, large city areas usually developed in places where there was fertile farmland.
One commonality between the people of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh is that they have a large Islamic population.
Democratic systems are present in certain areas in South Asia. However, India has the strongest democratic system in the area. India has some conflicts with Pakistan, including disputes over the region of Kashmir.
South Asia has high illiteracy rates in certain countries, which is attributed mostly to a lack of investment in human capital. Issues with Indiaβs economy include factors such as quotas, trade regulations, and tariffs.
Mohandas Gandhi was a very influential person in South Asia. He led nonviolent protests in order to get countries such as India independence from the colonial rule of countries such as Great Britain.
Below are questions you will need to explain in your own words on the test! Seek more information from your Connexus lessons to best answer these questions and then study your responses before taking your test!
When India received its independence from Britain, why was India divided into two different countries?
What are some reasons that eliminating poverty in several South Asia nations is difficult? What can these countries do to overcome poverty?
What are some environmental problems in South Asia?
How was the caste system set up and how does it lead to social inequality?

Written response answers (you can use these without being plagiarized :)
Question:
Why was India divided into two different countries when it won independence from Britain?
Answer:
India was divided into two countries because of the conflict between Muslims and Hindus living in the area. Muslims living in the NorthEastern region feared that they would face discrimination because the area was Hindu dominated. Britain decided to divide the area into two regions, India and Pakistan.
Question:
What are the obstacles to overcoming poverty in many South Asia nations? What must countries do to overcome poverty?
Answer:
Poverty is the biggest challenge in the region. Large populations, high population growth rates, and unequal treatment of women are all obstacles to solving the issue. To overcome poverty, countries need to provide better education for the people, particularly women.
Question:
Briefly summarize the environmental problems facing South Asia.
Answer:
The environmental challenges facing South Asia are centered around poor air quality, poor water quality, and climate change. Poor air quality is due in part from exhaust from motor vehicles and industry. Many people lack clean drinking water. Sewage sometimes goes into the ganges which people rely on for drinking water. Flooding also causes the polluted waters to spill over and damage crops. Climate change is also a threat to the area.
Question:
Explain how the caste system is structured and why it results in social inequality.
Answer:
The caste system is a hierarchical social structure based on family status and occupation. A personβs caste is fixed and there is no choice or way to change it. Social discrimination results from the caste system because people in high castes are generally treated better than people in lower castes.
