Which example is a function and which is not? Explain why.

1. Each student takes a selection of art classes.

2. Each student is placed in a math class.

Please Help!!
Thank You so much!!

A function can only have one value of the dependent variable for each value of the independent variable.

Therefore if you have several values of art class for a each student, then art class is not a function of student.

#1 is a function.

#2 is not a function.

Is that right?

Please Help!!
Thanks!!

ayuh

Please could someone else help me? Because I don't know what ayuh means...

Such as Ms. Sue or Writeacher....

Can you explain more on how to get the answer.

Thanks!!

ayuh = yes

Needs more help than I can give.

Sorry -- but I don't have the math skills to help.

Look, here is the definition of "function" in your words instead of mine:

"A function is a relation between two sets in which one element of the second set is assigned to each element of the first set."

Now if you have several art classes for each student, then MORE THAN one element of the second set is assigned to each student. - NOT ALLOWED

Therefore Number 1 is not allowed

and
Number 2, since it has ONE art subject for each student is allowed.

Thank you for your explanation.
