12 x 3 1/2 feet =36 1/2 inches

3 * 12 = 36
1/2 * 12 = 12/2 = 6

36 + 6 = 42

3 1/2 inches * 12 = 42 inches

12 * 1/2 = 6
and
36 + 6 = 42

note that is halfway between 3 feet (36") and 4 feet (48")

you can cancel units just like numbers
... 12 inches per foot ... 12 in/ft

multiply by 3.5 feet (changed to decimal)

(12 in/ft) * (3.5 ft) ... the ft cancel (top and bottom of fraction)
