and then taped so that one pair of opposite vertices coincide.
What is the number of inches in the perimeter of the resulting
pentagon? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest

  1. Actually take a sheet of paper and fold it joining opposite vertices creasing the fold.
    Unfold it and mark the crease with a pencil.
    From the other two opposite vertices draw parallel lines to the creased line. Notice you have two congruent parallelograms.
    The length of the crease is √(8.5^2+8.5^2) = appr 12.0208
    In each of the two parallelograms, let the short side be x
    then 2x + 8.5 = 11
    2x = 2.5
    Now fold the paper back to show the pentagon, then add up the sides:
    I see 12.0208 + 2x + 2(8.5)
    = 12.0208 + 2.5 + 17
    = 31.5208
