i also need help in this:
i am up to this part of a problem but i can not continue
i have to simplify the following
x = (-2 +/- sqrt 124)/(4)
so i know that sqrt 124 = 2 sqrt 31
so now i am not sure if i do the following
-2/4 + 2sqrt31 / 4 = -1/2 + ?
To simplify the expression x = (-2 +/- sqrt(124))/4, you correctly determined that sqrt(124) can be simplified as 2 sqrt(31).
Now, let's substitute 2 sqrt(31) back into the original expression:
x = (-2 +/- 2 sqrt(31))/4.
To simplify further, you can cancel out a factor of 2 in both the numerator and denominator:
x = -1/2 +/- sqrt(31)/2.
So, the simplified expression becomes:
x = -1/2 +/- (sqrt(31))/2.
This means that the two possible solutions for x are:
1. x = -1/2 + (sqrt(31))/2
2. x = -1/2 - (sqrt(31))/2.
Thus, you have successfully simplified the expression.
