You can find independant and dependant varibles on a simple google search, but indep is the cause of a situation, and depen is the effect of the cause.

1-Succession is the process of progressive changes in an ecosystem over time.

2-Changes in an ecosystem affects the animals and plants living there because when changes occur it is just another thing they have to adapt to, but sometimes these changes are big and ruin their ecosystem for good just like an earthquake.

The Process of Succession
The first plants to colonize a barren landscape are called the pioneer community. The plants in a pioneer community tend to be hardy. We often think of them as "weeds." Typically, they can thrive under adverse climate and soil conditions. Their stay may be brief. But they leave behind "friendlier" conditions for the plant communities to come.

The final stage of plant succession is the climax community. Climax communities tend to be stable. Unless destroyed by fire or other disaster, they may last for hundreds of years. Climax communities are good at recycling. They reuse and replenish nutrients in the soil. The plants and animals in a climax community tend to foster each other's health.

Eventually, however, a climax community can become too crowded. Fire is one way that nature clears out the mess. The cycle of plant succession then begins anew. If the lot is left undisturbed, sapling trees will eventually appear. The saplings may mature into large shade trees.

Primary and Secondary Succession
Plant scientists describe two types of succession. There is primary succession and secondary succession. Primary succession occurs in an environment that has never been colonized by plants. Examples include bare rock or a sand dune. For instance, a volcano pours lava down its mountain cone. The lava cools and cracks. Tiny moss spores settle in the cracks. They begin to grow, and eventually mosses appear. Later, ferns grow atop these mosses. Gradually, the plants break down the lava into soil.

Secondary succession occurs in an area where plants once grew. A fire or flood may have wiped out the earlier plant community. People may have destroyed the plants with bulldozers or pesticides. Once the disturbance has ended, secondary succession begins. As always, hardy pioneer plants will blaze the way.
