  1. McClellan ably built the army in the early stages of the war but was a sluggish and paranoid field commander who seemed unable to muster the courage to aggressively engage Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.

    So, actually, no. He wasn't reckless but actually way too protective and cautious of his own tactics. He would wait days and consider every possible outcome before making the final decision to attack Confederate forces. This helped the Confederates in some instances, giving them time to prepare for sometimes very difficult positions when they were more vulnerable. Any sensible General would have recognized that the Confederate forces at times held no ground against the Union but McClellan was just too careful and it made him slow.
