Write the equation of the line perpendicular to the given line and passing through the given point: y=3x−2 through (3,4)

this problem is really hard for me

The line has a slope of 3 because

y = mx+b where m is the slope.

Perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals.

So we have a 3 which makes our perp line's slope -1/3

If you multiply the two slopes you will always get a -1 if the lines are perpendicular If the lines are parallel the slopes are the same.

Now, you have the slop -1/3 and a point (3, 4).

There are couple different ways to get your line.

one way is to use y = mx+b

4 = (-1/3)(3) + b

4 = -1 + b

5 = b

you have m=-1/3 and b =5

y = mx + b
y = -1/3 x + b
